Quantitative liver MRI - that is, the use of MRI to obtain quantitative information about the properties of liver tissue beyond anatomical imaging is readily available on most clinical MR scanners and has slowly but surely made its way into mainstream clinical radiological practice. This virtual event explores clinical MRI methods used for quantification of liver fat, liver iron and liver stiffness available on current generation MRI scanners, reviewing clinical indications for their use, how these sequences work, how quantification can be undertaken in clinical radiological practice and some of the challenges, difficulties and errors that can arise when undertaking these measurements.

In the tradition of BIR MRI study days, this event was delivered as a double act, with a Clinical Radiologist explaining clinical needs and applications and a Physicist describing the underlying principles.  Together they discussed the challenges and opportunities that these cutting-edge techniques provide as well as their limitations. As such, this event provided an excellent learning opportunity for Radiologists, Radiographers, Physicists and Clinicians interested in developing and providing a quantitative liver MRI service at their institutions or for those simply interested in better understanding this growing application of MRI technology in clinical care.

Learning objectives (Specifically in relation to the measurement of liver fat, liver iron and liver stiffness with MRI):

• To understand the clinical indications for quantitative liver MRI measurements in current clinical pathways
• To obtain an overview of the MR physics underpinning quantitative liver MRI sequences
• To understand how to use the output from the MRI sequences to provide a meaningful clinical radiological report
• To understand some of the challenges that can occur during measurement, including artefacts and scenarios where measurements are less accurate or can fail
