Benefits and risks: preparing materials to encourage patients to talk to health professionals about radiation 09 May 2018

This talk updates delegates on the work of the Clinical Imaging Board working group set up to produce patient
information about the benefits and risks of radiation associated with imaging procedures.

Educational aims:
• To review the imperatives regarding the ‘risk conversation’ from the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure)
Regulations (IRMER) 2017.
• To explain the plan to provide materials for use in imaging departments to introduce the conversation.

• To demonstrate the factors and principles that are influencing the design of the materials and the wide range
of organisations involved in the design.
• To demonstrate how widespread take-up of the materials, once finalised, will ensure consistency of approach for
patients.
