IR(ME)R in radiotherapy 09 May 2018

The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) 2017 came into force on 6 February 2018,
repealing IRMER 2000 and its amendments 2006 and 2011 in addition to the Medicines (Administration of
Radioactive Substances) Regulations (MARS) 1978 and its 1995 and 2006 amendments.
IRMER 2017 formalised some existing practices, included some transitions from IRR 99 and included some new
requirements affecting radiotherapy providers.

These changes require each provider to review their IR(ME)R procedures and consider their practice to ensure
compliance with the new regulations.

This presentation outlines the general principals and their implications for service providers. Key
changes and an update on planned guidance will be shared to support clinical personnel in their understanding
of the new regulations.

Educational aim:
To understand the implications of IR(ME)R 2017 on RT service delivery.
