Osteoporosis frequently results in painful and disabling fractures and often destroys patients’ mobility and independence. Very effective treatments are now available but we need to identify patients at risk in order to achieve benefits. Vertebral insufficiency fractures are common, usually develop insidiously and do not present acutely, thus being mistakenly attributed to degenerative change and remaining undiagnosed, despite significant morbidity. Radiology is in a prime position to identify these ‘occult’ fractures during the course of body CT & MRI being performed for unrelated reasons. By adopting a simple system to identify and alert to the presence of these fractures, a substantial improvement can be brought about in preventing these patients from suffering disabling consequences of further vertebral and non vertebral fractures. This video will describe both the mechanism and clinical importance of undertaking this simple addition to routine reporting.
